HEALTH TRENDS

News to Quench Your Thirst

Chlorine or ozone? Municipal water systems add chlorine to the water supply to kill harmful microorganisms. But producers of commercially bottled water prefer to add ozone for disinfection. Why? This toxic toxic gas leaves less taste in the product. (US environmental Protection Agency, September 2005.)

US schools ban soda. In a move to combat shildhood and adolescent obesity, most Us high schools will only offer diet soda, as well as sports drinks, lowfat milk, water and fruit juices. Elementary and middle schools will make unsweetened juice, lowfat milk and water available. The changes are scheduled to go into effect beginning with the 2008-2009 school year. (Los Angeles Times, 2006.)

Your skin may be thirsty. Many people are aware that the human body is approximately 70% water. Less widely known is that water also composes 70% of the skin. As with any other part of the body, skin needs constant hydration to replenish its water content, and maintain its firmness and flexibility. (American Water Works Association, 2006.)

Manage your weight with water. Foods with high water content can help you control your weight. How? They have more bulk and thus satisfy feelings of hunger more quickly. High-water content foods, such as fruits and vegetables, also slow absorption so the stomach remains full longer. (WebMD, 2006)

Cold vs. Hot. Drinking plenty of ice-cold water may also help give the body a small boost in metabolic rate, because cold water can trigger the release of energy for heat. (MSN Health, 2006)
